is a catalyst and an enabler for change, driven by the ethos “Staying Conscious” and “I add value”, she has over 16 years' vast experience in the HR field evolving from an HR Consultant to HR Generalist and Business Strategist. An ardent reader, she is most passionate about continuous learning and self-improvement, and currently in the midst of researching and writing her Who Am I? Book series for all. Hajjah Ayesha Abdullah Scott was born in Sussex, England in 1960. She embraced Islam in 1975. Since which she has devoted her life to spreading the message of Islam. She has been writing since a young age. Alhamdulillah, as Yeanti mentioned last week, we exceeded our target. Last weekend, Hani & I joined the team to distribute the cash, cupcakes, serunding and cookies from all of you to various homes. Fathers Facing Extinction? Notes from parenting talk on "Cool Boys Super Sons"

What struck me most about the talk this morning with Kak Jamilah and
her husband was the statement that Bro Ahmad (Kak Jamilah's husband)
said about "fathers facing extinction". When it comes to attending
parenting talks, 80% of the attendees would be the mothers. Where are
fathers? Do they expect mothers to learn everything and take the sole
responsibility of parenting the children? Do they think that being a
breadwinner is enough to qualify them as a "father"? Many fathers
don't realise that it takes more than that to be a "father".

The topic of the talk was how to nurture "Cool Boys Super Sons", which
is also Kak Jamilah's latest book.

Statistics shows that over 90% of drug addicts in Malaysia are male.
Juvenile cases involving boys are also on the rise. For parents with
boys, this is surely a cause of concern.

Why do children misbehave? According to research, it is because
- they are bored
- they want attention
- they lack discipline.

When the children are bored, they would seek activities which
stimulate them. Some of the activities could be against the law. One
may wonder why would they risk their lives by getting into illegal
activities (drugs, mat rempit, etc)? It is for the attention. They
would rather face punishment to get attention, rather than no
attention at all (if they do "mundane, legal" things). So, after one
has given the attention, what happens next if the child still
misbehave? That is when discipline needs to come in.

Discipline is about requiring a change in the behavior and showing how
to change it.

Boys between 6-12 look up to their fathers. At this stage it is
important for the father to play a more active role in the child's
life. The son is seeking a role model to emulate. When the son is in
his teens, he needs a mentor in his life, which could still be a
father.

Thus, we see that for boys, fathers need to be there for their sons,
not just in a "touch and go" fashion. Spend one on one time with your
son, one son at a time if you have more. Share their interest. Listen
to them. Understand their needs. Guide them to the right path. Put
aside TIME to be with them because if you don't, they will not wait
for you to have the time. Remember the "Cats in the Cradle" song?

With statistics showing that boys are in dire need of attention, where
are the fathers and what role are they playing in their sons' lives?
it is not enough to simply say "I will do what my father did in
bringing me up, so I should be ok" because the challenges that our
children face now are far different and more dangerous than what we
did when we were growing up. And some of the "traditional roles" are
not suitable for our children's times.

Bro Ahmad suggested a session entirely for fathers, to talk about
parenting, marital relationship and such. Any takers?

Delivering Gifts to Moms @ UMMC 24th May 2008

On Saturday 24th May 2008, eight ladies from UmmikuSayang and WENA delivered 50 sets of gifts for the mothers tending to their children at the Pediatric Oncology Ward and PICU at University Malaya Medical Centre in PJ. The gifts were sponsored by members of UmmikuSayang and their friends. It was painful to see the young children suffering yet some managed to put up a smile when we handed them the gifts. Berat mata memandang, berat lagi bahu memikul.

A big THANK YOU to all that made the event possible and helped bring some cheer to the mothers this Mother's Day month.

Give-A-Gift Campaign for Mothers at Hospitals

A few years ago, we did a charity gift collection to give to mothers
who were tending to their sick children at hospitals. We collected gifts
from members and packed them into gift bags
and distributed them to the moms at the hospitals. It was a
heart-warming and touching event, to see the surprise on the mothers'
faces when they receive gifts for them, instead of their children.

This year, we want to do something similar in May. Instead of
focusing only on us as mothers, we would like to extend our care and
love to other mothers who have sacrificed their time to tend for their
children at the hospitals.

We have gathered items to put in the gift pack worth RM50. We are now
looking for sponsors to buy those gifts for us to distribute to the mothers.

We are in the midst of finalising the hospital and numbers. Will update
the info here as soon as we get the confirmation.

10-12th March: “I Am A Khalifah of Allah” Fun Camp
10am - 12noon
Based on the Khalifah Method, this camp combines team building activities, speech & drama, crafts and games to instill the three elements of being a good Khalifah in the children. Suitable for ages 7-9, the class will be conducted by experienced pre-school teachers who have used the Khalifah method in their schools.

Fees : RM30/day or RM75 for all three days.
ALIM Kids and UmmikuSayang members : RM25/day or RM70 for three days.

11-12th March : “Baking Fun with Chef Kay”
3-5pm
Our popular baking class is back! This time Chef Kay will show the children how to bake Fruit tartlets and Blueberry Cheese tarts on the first day and how to decorate a birthday cake one the second day. Baking teaches the children patience, maths and science in a fun way!

Fees : RM40/day or RM75 for two days.

ALIM Kids Playgroup @ UmmikuSayang

We have completed all 6 modules of Level 1 last month for our pioneer batch of toddlers. They will proceed to Level 2 of the playgroup strating 2nd February. Level 2 will have more emphasis on Islamic values such as about the prophets and Islamic manners.

About the speakers:

Dayang Lily Abang Muas & Hani Arziana left their career as Systems Engineers to start a on-line bookshop specialising in Islamic children’s books in 2001, via their website, www.UmmikuSayang.com. UmmikuSayang grew not only as an on-line bookstore, but also as an on-line community of Muslim mothers which now has over 3000 on-line members.
